Follow up derm. appt.
10:03 AM on Aug. 17, 2008

So I had my follow up appt. with the derm. last Thursday.  First thing she asks is if the shampoo is working and I told her it has gotten worse.  My hair is so thin now I can't really pull it into a pony tail because then you see the scalp.   She looked at where she injected the steroid and noticed that while the hair is growing back there, the skin has atrophied.  She said that she is very reluctant to give me another injection.  She said that because my skin is so sensitive, I could be having a reaction to the steroid shampoo and gel.  I also told her about how my scalp was always really red, itchy and has these hard welts on it.  Now, this summer I started smoking again...bad, I know.  I also drink quite a bit of red wine, probably more since my hair started falling out.  So I did an experiment, I quite smoking and drinking and a few days later my scalp didn't itch as bad and it wasn't red anymore.  I told the derm. this, and she said that smoking and drinking will make the itching worse.  I can't remember the technical parts, but either way, it isn't helping the inflammation if not contributing to it.  This time she prescribed an antibiotic for the bumps on my head.  Two weeks of cephalexin.  I really don't like taking antibiotics especially when I feel fine.  She also suggested that I start Rogaine 5%.  I asked her if there was an initial shed, and she said no, only if you stop using it.  Well, I heard there is initial shedding, and I don't have much more hair I can lose.  She also told me if I wanted to, I could try a short bout of Prednisone.  I told her no, my aunt was on it and she lost her hair, granted she was on it for a while and she had other health issues.  I'm just not ready for that yet.  If anyone has tried prednisone and had some good results, I would love to know.

The tiny bit of good news is that she noticed some little hairs growing in the bald spot in the back.  I would love to have some grow back to cover the bald spots on top, but I'll take what I can get.

Hey Becca,

What did your derm mean when she said that your scalp atrophied...has it become thinner, wasted away? With all the flakiness and itchiness of my scalp, I feel like it has gotten too weak to support any new healthy hairs...=\

Hi Becca,

I received the derm patch and it did cover the bald area great. I went to work for the 1st time in a long time with my hair down. I was on cloud nine being able to wear my hair down. I too smoke cigs I wonder if there is a connection with that? It's great that you were able to quit. Keep me posted on how the antibiotic works. Did the derm say that there may be a health issue that could be causing the hair loss for you? I've notice some baby hairs growing back in the big bald spot too. But these hairs are very tiny it would take years I guess to grow back to long hairs. We are in a catch 22. Seriously, they say stress is a major cause and how can you not have stress when our hair is shedding like crazy and we can see bare spots on our head. When I was at Walgreens the other day looking @ Rogaine and in that same section was this box of supplement vitimins called Nu Hair and when reading on the box it really described the it is a natural nutrient booster that supplies vital botanical components to nourish the follicle at its roots. Than I also looked up this product (Nu Hair
Regrowth Tables) online and it described my condition exactly. So I am now taking these tablets. Did your Derm make another follow up appt. w/you? I have some stress issues but I just can't believe that it would cause this. What do you think?

Hey Becca, so let me ask... do you have aa as well as aga? What is making the hair thin all over? I'm so confused by all the different versions of hair loss.... I'm sorry that you are going around in circles... I know how frustrating this is!!

So, tell me about this red wine. I am not a drinker at all... I haven't had a drink (except a toast of champagne at a wedding) since way before my daughter was born. (she's 5) I think wine would help me chill out... not in large doses, but some. Trouble is, I know nothing about wine at all.. only had it once, didn't like it, but who knows what it was?! Just curious. So, are you going to stop the smoking to see if the itching subsides? As a radiation therapist, you should stop anyway... :o) not that you need a lecture... you're a big girl! :o)

Are the antibiotics suppose to help with itching, or with the scalp atrophy? I feel bad for you... It's so freakin' hard to know what is the best to do... never knowing if what we are doing is making it worse!

hang in there.. Misty
