Dealing with hair loss
10:20 AM on Feb. 25, 2008
I am a 44 year old woman who went through breast cancer at an early age. I was 31 when I was diagnosed. They had found it very early. Since breast cancer is not rare on my Mothers side, I have been going for mammograms since I was 25 and that is how they found the lump. It was on the right side under my breast. The mass was small only 2cm. They had heard of a new treatment which they felt I was a perfect candidate. I only had to have 6 treatments. It reduced the mass and I was in remission. I have had no complications since and I still go for my mammograms every year. Cancer runs through our family on both sides now. My Father was just diagnosed with metatstis liver cancer. They have predicted 2 years. He is doing quite well and is not sick from the chemo. We pray for more years. My question is to everyone that has had hair loss from treatment. My hair came back but due to the lack of hair on the male side of the family, it is very thin in front. I have tried a lot of different things and a transplant is not one I wish to have. Has anyone had any good products that have helped them. I have had good luck with one but I was wondering if anyone else has ideas that they are willing to share. I will share too.

HI Sassy. I actually work with cancer survivors and know that you are a brave and courageous person. I'm so sorry about your dad. I think I saw that you're in Canada. Have you contacted the Canadian Cancer Society (or www.cancer.org) to see about support and resources for him and your family? As for hairloss treatment... I have alopecia, but tried minoxodil (2%) and minor success for a short time. My dermatologist said that I could even use the 5% (Rogaine for men) as long as I'm not pregnant or nursing. It might be worth a try for you. FYI though, the thing is that you have to keep using it or your hair may fall out again. Take care of yourself and your dad.
