About Me
About Me: I am a hair restoration surgeon in Walnut Creek, CA. Since I am one of the few women in this field and since Alopecia (Areata, Universalis, and Totalis, and FPHL) runs in my family, I can relate to women's hair loss and I like to spread what medical information I know. I just got through a period of telogen effluvium from the birth of my first child and have had them throughout medical school and residency. I am joining mostly to give the sisterhood support and so I can refer many of my patients to this helpful community.

hi dr sara--i think that it is awesome you have joined this site to support women dealing with such powerful emotions. i would love if you could answer a question, the best you can. i have been dealing with subtle hair loss for about 6 years. i can't think of what may have triggered a major shed, i was 23. it stabilized for the most part, but over the last two years it has gotten noticibaly thinner. i've had a lot of tests done, and the one glaring thing is severe iron deficiency. i have read all sorts of opinions on the connection between hair loss and iron deficiency, what are your thoughts? i think that i have been deficient for the majority of my hair loss experience. my hair loss is even and diffuse, but over the last few months it seems to be worse on the sides.i am also starting laser therapy next week and wonder what you think about that treatment for women with thinning hair either as a result of genetics or vitamin/nutiritional deficiencies. thank you so much for taking the time to give me a bit of honest advice.

Hi Dr. Sara,

I just read your blog entry about spironolactone. Are there any cases in which it can exacerbate hair loss instead of helping? About a month after starting it, the shedding doubled since about two weeks ago. However, this could also be remaining TE from stopping the BC pill in early May....

Just curious about your thoughts. Your baby is so adorable!! :)

Welcome Sara! Thank you for the list - I have had many of those in the past, but am trying to find a new dr. since I recently moved 1/2 way across the country! I'm hoping to start from square one and find some answers this time around. Would you recommend a PCP, Dermatologist, or Endocrinologist as the route to pursue?

Hi, Dr. Sara. Thanks. IWhat a beautiful family you have I''ve had all of tests you recommend (and more) except for the ESR. Do doctors typically order that one if the patient has no symptoms of an autoimmune disease? I just can't see my endo ordering that for me. Which autoimmune diseases are associated with hair loss? Lupus? Thanks in advance, Lisa
