Hi Julie -- Like Lisa, I have alopecia (except my hair is all gone now) and the sore spots always meant that my hair was about to fall out at that spot. During my shedding phase, I didn't worry about hair dryers or not -- it didn'...
Hi Chari -- Thanks!! I am so impressed with that website and the possibilities. I will definitely explore this option -- I am so tired of having to readjust my "hair" when I'm running or just out with friends. In fact,...
So... by the time I got to the front door with both my robe and my hair on Zach's DAD was standing there and his Mom was in the car waving hello from there. What a crazy day! But, it did spawn an idea for a new book: "Expose Yours...
When I look at myself in the mirror, I see beyond the baldness and into the person now. Before, I would just see the outside. The most important change has been that my daughters now understand that beauty is more than skin deep. You have to be who you are on the inside because you cannot count on what's outside to get you through life. I am stronger and more confident now because I know who I am -- and know what's important.
About Me
About Me:
First and foremost, I am the mother of my five children. My husband and I are both in our late, late thirties. I work full time as the National Training Director for a national non-profit organization. So, obviously, my looks are important to me since I speak in front of groups every week. I have alopecia totalis -- and am at peace with this -- but want to use this experience to help others. My plan is to couple with with my professional passion and found a non-profit organization to provide wigs for people with alopecia and other types of hair loss.
Oh my gosh you are really pretty. Was your original hair red? I thank you for your comment and wish you the best of luck with the non profit organization to provide wigs. My mother and sister both lost their hair because of breast cancer and chemo. I too have had breast cancer but it was just in my ducts and i had the breast removed and did not have to have chemo but i think the whole 10 hour operation and the anesthesia were the start of my hair loss. My sister wore a non human hair wig and disliked it. Is you wig human hair or synthetic? It looks great whatever it is. Keep up the good attitude!
hello :) I've read your blogs and loved your openesss about everything. I have heard from a good friend here about a site that is for wigs that are vaccum sealed on and meant to be totally natural and you can do anything in them (eg swim, or shower and wash your hair). They're made in the country I'm in and you have alopecia here wigs are govt subsidised, so if you like the look and wanted to ever try I could purchase it at the subsidised rate for you. I don't have alopecia aretrea but seeing how incredible these are its kind of nice to know that if anything ever happned that I wanted to go the wig route there are such amazing natural options. I love your pics too, I especially like the red head you :) Anyway the site is www.freedomwigs.co.nz. :)
Kathy, Your hair looks really good. I like the short blond cut. I've had long hair for 32 years so I think short would be a little drastic. I always loved my thick, long hair. Where did you get your wigs? Were they hard to find? I'm probably going to be at that stage soon. I would like to start looking now. Are your wigs real hair or synthetic? I've heard that real are hard to deal with. Thanks
Hi Kathy, Thanks for all the information and for sharing your photos....I am just now starting to try on wigs and I hate every minute of it. They all just scream WIG!!!... I don't look like myself in any of them. I admire your courage to changes styles and colors. I am still very new to all of this.
Yes, I am still working as an RN. I have been a nurse for 18 years now. The first few years I worked in a level 3 neonatal intensive care nursery. I have been delivering babies now for about 12 years. I am now working in a much smaller hospital than I worked in before, so the pace is a bit slower (most days) and I enjoy the work much more. (Not having time to give special attention to laboring women should be a crime.) Someday I may go back to the NICU (when OB wears me out), but right now I am still basking in the miracle of participating in birth. Dottie
I think it is great that you work for ACS. It must have actually helped put things into perspective when you lost your hair. I would definitely be interested in opportunities! I interned for a few months in high school with an organization called Cancervive, which produces documentaries for people on how to deal with life after cancer. For example, there was this one called "Back to Work After Breast Cancer." It was an interesting experience. Unfortunately I was not there long enough to really help out. I am glad ACS has you. Your compassion I am sure is felt by many.
