What Caused The Onset Of Your Hair Loss?: Combination of Things
How has your hair loss changed you?: I try not to be self-concious about the fact that I KNOW that others can see that I am balding. But I am. I wear a hat on the weekends when I am out and about. During the week, at work, I try to stay in my office, where I have dim lamp light. My co-workers think I have a cool, soothing office with mood lighting, but I know that I can't bear to work under the harch glare of florecent lighting, showing how very, very thin my hair is. I am by nature a fairly social person, and I enjoy being out and about. But lately, it's just getting harder. People met me and the first thing they do is glance at my hairline. I watch their eyes. I can't say that I blame them - it's unusual and odd. Looking at a woman's scalp isn't normal.
About Me
About Me: I am 37, nearly 38. I have 1 daughter (nearly 16). I've been a single mother my entire parenthood. I've had my share of relationships. I do enjoy being the only parent in the home. went back to school in 2003, and got my JD in 2006. I practice mostly family law, I work in all areas of general litigation. Becoming an attorney was one of my life's goals.

Madeline, I am in Dallas. I am sorry you are dealing with this. I am currently doing some wig research, I don't know if you are at that point, but if you know of any good wig shop in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, will you let me know? Thanks so much.

I was just reading about biotin shampoo. My mom does hair, and I have gone to the "stylist only" supply stores. The shelves are covered with products that will do anything for anyone. I don't know, I seem to be a skeptic. However, at 30, I am willing to try the shampoo that says it will help.

I admire you for pursuing your career with a child. My kids are 5 and 2, and I don't know how in the world I would have done it. My husband is recovering from surgery. He tore his achilles tendon playing basketball and now he is in a cast and not able to walk for 12 weeks. I am living the life of a single parent, plus a bonus child of 30 years old, and I sympathize with anyone who can handle it. Dinner and bedtime is ridiculous!! We are so used to tag teaming the evening, now I am exhausted by the time they go to sleep. Instead of going to sleep like I should, I want to just sit and do nothing for a while.

Good luck if you see another Dr. I had to wait over 6 months to see the dermatologist who deals with female hair loss. It is scary what the side effects of these medicines can cause. I know I am the one who went to see the Dr. and they suggest treatment, but I am very uneasy about the Finasteride. When it says for a woman to not even touch the pill, I can't really say I feel good about swallowing it.

have a good weekend... what is left! Talk more later. :o)

Hi Cynthia,
I am new to the network and read your story. Just curious what kind of homeopathic treatment have you tried, and do you think it was beneficial? I have just met with a dermatologist who took me seriously and have started Rogaine. I also started Spironolactone and had a reaction to it, so I stopped.

I love this site and being able to relate to so many women who understand. Thanks for your honesty.

Hi madeline: WHLP has also been my first experience with websites & first time I ever blogged. It's been very difficult for me navigating the website, but last week I finally learned how to request friends & I learned how to post comments on profiles. Bye for now Vonnie

Hello Madeline: I am glad we are friends. I am not very computer literate, so that's why it took me this long to get in touch with you. It is only a few days ago that I learned how to request a friend & I also learned how to comment on a profile. I joined the WHLP Network because I have a family member who has always had fine thin hair and it has been very difficult for her to deal with. When I read that you wrote a comment that you also had thin
hair, I knew I wanted to be in contact with you. You have such a beautiful smile on your profile picture. I see you are from Ft. Worth TX. We've visited that area on various occasions-I have relatives in Dallas that we visit. I am from Wisconsin. Bye for now. Vonnie

Hi Madeline, thyroid is always a consideration when it comes to hair loss. Sometimes it becomes more complicated than just treating the thyroid, as in my case I have low thyroid and have been taking synthroid for years. Starting in 2006 my doctor started elevating my dosage and then again in 2007. Those two years were the worst hair shedding years of my life, even compared to when I first started losing my hair. Lowering my dosage back down to the original level as was on many years ago, has brought down the shedding dramatically. Of course I still have female pattern hair loss, but at least it is not being compounded by the shedding from the excess dosage of synthroid that did not agree with me.

I am really glad you have found a lot of great knowledge here, all these women are so wonderful, Everyone has something to share and it really helps to find out what others have already learned.

Definitely visit Kathyloulu's profile for some awesome wig advice, and some pretty darn clever blog posts.

So glad you are here!

Hi Cynthia, I am also a new member to the sight and let me tell you these women are awesome! I have never had anyone to talk to about this that actually understands what I am going through. My family, friends, and even my doctors usually dismiss my horrified feelings about losing my hair because they can't see it as any big deal simply because I hide it well. Anyhow, welcome! =)

Hey Cynthia,
Welcome to the Network! You have definitely found the right place for understanding. I know that each of us can relate to the comments that you made about lighting. I also try to always be the one taking the photos instead of being photographed. But in situations where I absolutely must have my picture taken I have learned to always arrange myself where the least amount of light possible will shine on my scalp.

I was also a single parent for many years, but remarried about 5 years ago. I can really relate to your appreciation for being the only parent in the home. My husband is a wonderful person and a great father, but life was so much easier when I could make all the decisions without having to think of how he would react. Life as a single parent is challenging, difficult, taxing, and sometimes almost impossible. But it was also very rewarding to know that my children were growing up to be such amazing people in some part due to my parenting.

Welcome again and blessings,
Dottie
PS. Your photo does look great!

Hi there - I just had to let you know how great your photo is. Not only did I think you were in your 20's, before looking at your age (you look amazing!), but your hair looks really great in the photo. Do you find that short hair gives you better thickness/coverage/volume? I have been thinking about going short, but am petrified to do anything but what I have done for the last 10 years. I do a side part and tuck behind the other ear, for security measures :) Welcome!

Hey y'all - I'm really touched by all the comments. I had no idea responses would be this quick. Thanks. I've never had anyone to talk to about my hair...just my hairstylist who is wonderful and very supportive. It sucks that you all have to deal with this, too, but I am SO HAPPY to find out that I am not the only one.
